Secondary Succession I & II acrylic on vinyl 36x48" each 2006
|
I had two banners of artwork in the Ann Arbor Art
Center's Off the Wall Gallery "Tree Town" exhibit!
Banners were on display in Downtown Ann Arbor
Matthaei Botanical Gardens, as a part of their
Centennial Celebration, mid-February until the end
of April 2007.
The Off the Wall Gallery is the Ann Arbor Art
Center's newest community building project in the
visual arts. In collaboration with the Downtown
Development Authority and the Main Street Area
Association, Off the Wall Gallery takes art beyond
four walls and into the street. On Main, Liberty,
Fourth and Washington Streets, 50 lampposts
display original works of art that are part of
three-month long, themed exhibitions.

About these works...
Secondary Succession is the series of community changes which take place on a
previously colonized, but disturbed or damaged habitat. Examples include areas
which have been cleared of existing vegetation (such as after tree-felling in a
woodland) and destructive events such as fires.
To stay within the parameters of the "Tree Town" exhibit theme, I have used the
basic architectural symbol for a deciduous tree, which will be widely
recognizable by persons in that field. As Ann Arbor has many architectural,
engineering and construction firms, I thought it would be a fun symbol to utilize
with a little modification and repetition.
